Building in Travis County
The county is split by the Balcones Escarpment. East of it, along and beyond I-35, lie the clay soils of the Blackland Prairie, where foundations move with the seasons. West of it, the Hill Country rises on limestone around Lake Travis, Lake Austin, Lakeway, Bee Cave and West Lake Hills, where steep lots, rock excavation and runoff rules shape every pool, deck and addition.
Much of western Travis County is part of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve system, set up to protect endangered songbird habitat. Land in or near the preserve can carry clearing and development restrictions, so we check before planning work that removes trees or brush.

Inside city limits, each city issues its own building permits and runs its own inspections.
